Adult Tonsillectomy: How Is It Different from Children?

view count:

Adult tonsillectomy differs significantly from children in surgical indications, surgical difficulty and postoperative recovery, requiring more careful evaluation and preparation.

Adult tonsil tissue has a higher degree of fibrosis and richer blood vessels, with relatively greater surgical bleeding risk and more obvious postoperative pain.

Special Considerations for Adult Surgery

1. Adult tonsillitis is often accompanied by a history of peritonsillar abscess, with severe tissue adhesion, increasing surgical difficulty.

2. Adults have a higher risk of postoperative bleeding, especially secondary bleeding 5-7 days after surgery, requiring close observation.

3. Postoperative pain in adults lasts longer, usually taking 10-14 days to fully recover.

Preoperative Evaluation Points

Preoperative coagulation function tests and electrocardiogram examinations should be completed to evaluate general condition. Patients with underlying diseases such as hypertension and diabetes need to stabilize their condition first.

Postoperative Care Focus

Adults need to pay special attention to oral hygiene after surgery, use mouthwash to clean the mouth, avoid forceful coughing or throat clearing, eat warm and cool soft food, and take pain medication on time.
